Sunday May 3 Worship Guide

ENTRANCE WITH PRAISE

Greetings:

Minister:    The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!

People:     And also with you!

*Introit: “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in his wonderful face,

and the things of earth

will grow strangely dim

in the light of his glory and grace.

 Call to Worship:

Leader:   Though the way seems long and the road rough

People:  Yet will we trust the One who leads us.

Leader:   Though the direction is unknown and we don’t know the outcome

People:  Yet will we place our lives in Christ’s loving care.

Leader:   It is Christ who brings us out to green pastures and restores our souls.

People:  It is Christ who gives us hope and peace. Praise be to Christ our Lord.

Leader:   Let us pray.

ALL: We are standing at the gate, o loving Shepherd, not sure about the journey. But you have called our names, and in your voice, we hear such love and surety. Bring us safely on the journey and strengthen us that we may serve you in all that we do. AMEN.

Hymn: “People Need the Lord”

People need the Lord,

people need the Lord;

at the end of broken dreams,

he’s the open door.

People need the Lord,

people need the Lord;

when will we realize

people need the Lord.

People need the Lord,

people need the Lord;

at the end of broken dreams,

he’s the open door.

People need the Lord,

people need the Lord;

when will we realize

people need the Lord.

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

Words of Assurance

Jesus said, I have come that you may have life and have it abundantly.

In so confessing, we have returned to the shepherd, the guardian of our souls who   welcomes us with open arms and a glad heart.

Know that the shepherd of our lives never abandons us, is always calling our name, and unfailingly loves and forgives us.

*Gospel Reading:                         John 10:1-10

1"Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. 2The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. 5They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers." 6Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

7So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. 8All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. 9I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.

Leader:   This is the Word of God, for the People of God

People:  Thanks be to God!

Sermon: “Endure”                                             1 Peter 2:19-25

19For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. 20If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. 21For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that   you should follow in his steps.

22"He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth."

23When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. 24He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. 25For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have      returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Hymn: “He Leadeth Me; O Blessed Thought”

He leadeth me! O blessed thought,
O words with heavenly comfort fraught;
Whate’er I do, where’er I be,
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes ’mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, o’er troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.

He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Lord, I would place my hand in thine,
Nor ever murmur or repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since this my God that leadest me

He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

And when my task on earth is done,
When, by Thy grace, the victory's won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadest me.

He leadeth me! He leadeth me!
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Affirmation of Faith:

The Apostles’ Creed—Ecumenical Version

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic** church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

And to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now

And ever shall be,

World without end. Amen. Amen

SENDING FORTH

Hymn: “Since Jesus Came Into My Heart”

What a wonderful change in my life

has been wrought
   Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long

I had sought,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o’er my soul

like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart

I have ceased from my wand’ring

and going astray,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!
And my sins which were many

are all washed away,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o’er my soul

like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart

I’m possessed of a hope that is

steadfast and sure,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!
And no dark clouds of doubt now

my pathway obscure,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o’er my soul

like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart

There’s a light in the valley of death

now for me,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!
And the gates of the City beyond

I can see,
   Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o’er my soul

like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart

I shall go there to dwell in that City I know,

  Since Jesus came into my heart!

And I’m happy, so happy as onward I go,

  Since Jesus came into my heart!

Since Jesus came into my heart!
Since Jesus came into my heart!
Floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll,
Since Jesus came into my heart
