PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

Words of Assurance

There is overwhelming greatness in God’s power and grace.

God’s steadfast love lasts forever, offering grace upon grace and mercy upon mercy.

Thanks be to God. Amen

*New Testament Reading: Ephesians 1:15-23

15 I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason 16 I do not cease to give thanks for you as I remember you in my prayers. 17 I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation as you come to know him, 18 so that, with the eyes of your heart  enlightened, you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the   riches of his glorious inheritance among the saints, 19 and what is the immeasurable greatness of his power for us who believe, according to the working of his great power. 20 God put this power to work in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and above every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the age to come. 22 And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all.

In his time, in his time;

he makes all things beautiful in his time.

that you do just what you say

in your time.

In your time, in your time;

you make all things beautiful in your time.

Sermon: “After Giving Thanks”  John 6:5-23

5 When he looked up and saw a large crowd coming toward him, Jesus said to Philip, “Where are we to buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He said this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Six months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each of them to get a little.” 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, said to him, 9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?” 10 Jesus said, “Make the people sit down.” Now there was a great deal of grass in the place; so they sat down, about five thousand in all. 11 Then Jesus took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated; so also the fish, as much as they wanted. 12 When they were satisfied, he told his disciples, “Gather up the fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up, and from the fragments of the five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, they filled twelve baskets. 14 When the people saw the sign that he had done, they began to say, “This is indeed the prophet who is to come into the world.”

15 When Jesus realized that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, he withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

16 When evening came, his disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, and Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. 19 When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and coming near the boat, and they were terrified. 20 But he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” 21 Then they wanted to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat reached the land toward which they were going.

22 The next day the crowd that had stayed on the other side of the sea saw that there had been only one boat there. They also saw that Jesus had not got into the boat with his disciples, but that his disciples had gone away alone. 23 Then some boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.

 RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Hymn: “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”

Joyful, joyful, we adore thee,

God of glory, Lord of love;

hearts unfold like flowers before thee,

opening to the sun above.

Melt the clouds of sin and sadness;

drive the dark of doubt away;

giver of immortal gladness,

fill us with the light of day!

All thy works with joy surround thee,

earth and heaven reflect thy rays,

stars and angels sing around thee,

center of unbroken praise.

Field and forest, vale and mountain,

flowery meadow, flashing sea,

singing bird and flowing fountain

call us to rejoice in thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving,

ever blessing, ever blest,

wellspring of the joy of living,

ocean depth of happy rest!

Thou our Father, Christ our brother,

all who live in love are thine;

teach us how to love each other,

lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus,

which the morning stars began;

love divine is reigning o'er us,

binding all within its span.

Ever singing, march we onward,

victors in the midst of strife,

joyful music leads us sunward

in the triumph song of life.

Psalter: The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty,

   maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord;

   who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

   born of the virgin Mary,

   suffered under Pontius Pilate,

   was crucified, died, and was buried;

the third day he rose from the dead;

   he ascended into heaven,

   and sitteth at the right hand of God

   the Father Almighty.

From thence he shall come

   to judge the quick and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

   the holy catholic Church,

   the communion of saints,

   the forgiveness of sins,

   the resurrection of the body,

   and the life everlasting. Amen.

Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

praise him, all creatures here below;

praise him above, ye heavenly host;

praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Amen

SENDING FORTH

Hymn: “I Know Whom I Have Believed

I know not why God’s wondrous grace

to me he hath made known,

nor why, unworthy, Christ in love

redeemed me for his own.

But I know whom I have believed,

and am persuaded that he is able

to keep that which I’ve committed

unto him against that day.

I know not how this saving faith

to me he did impart,

nor how believing in his word

wrought peace within my heart.

But I know whom I have believed,

and am persuaded that he is able

to keep that which I’ve committed

unto him against that day.

I know not how the Spirit moves,

convincing us of sin,

revealing Jesus through the word,

creating faith in him.

But I know whom I have believed,

and am persuaded that he is able

to keep that which I’ve committed

unto him against that day.

I know not when my Lord may come,

at night or noonday fair,

nor if I walk the vale with him,

or meet him in the air.

But I know whom I have believed,

and am persuaded that he is able

to keep that which I’ve committed

unto him against that day.

Benediction
