Palm/Passion Sunday

Creating Disciples of Jesus who Transform the World

ENTRANCE WITH PRAISE

Greetings:

Minister: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!

People: And also with you!

Special Music: “The Power of the Cross” Michael

Centering Words:

Exaltation and joy. Passover sacrifice and betrayal. Death and life. Such is the terrain of Holy Week. Such are the waters that sweep us through the holy mystery of our faith-the waters that reveal the joy and the cost of discipleship.

*Call to Worship:

Leader:   Sing glory to God in the highest heaven.

People:  The king is coming!

Leader:   Even if we keep silent, the rocks will shout it out.

People:  The king is coming!

Leader:   The king is coming!

People:  Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.

Leader:   Let us pray.

ALL: God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come, be with us in the joys and sorrows of life. We turn to you this day, knowing that we will not be put to shame. Be at our side when the crowd shouts “Hosanna!” as Jesus rode into Jerusalem. Be with us also when the crowd turns, as those who loved him fell away. Their story is our story. Be with us in the telling, that we may walk with Jesus once more on the long journey of Holy Week. Amen.

Hymn: Come, Christians, Join to Sing”

Come, Christians, join to sing: Alleluia! Amen!

loud praise to Christ our King: Alleluia! Amen!

Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice;

praise is his gracious choice. Alleluia! Amen!

Come, lift your hearts on high: Alleluia! Amen!

Let praises fill the sky: Alleluia! Amen!

He is our guide and friend; to us he'll condescend;

his love shall never end: Alleluia! Amen!

Praise yet the Lord again: Alleluia! Amen!

Life shall not end the strain: Alleluia! Amen!

On heaven's blissful shore his goodness we'll adore,

singing for evermore: Alleluia! Amen!

PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

Words of Assurance

All who call on the name of the Lord are answered. There is nothing to fear.

The Lord stands beside you to help. God’s steadfast love endures forever.

This is the day that the Lord has made! Rejoice and be glad.

Amen and Amen.

*New Testament Reading: Philippians 2:5-11

4 Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others. 5 Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus,

6      who, though he was in the form of God,

did not regard equality with God

as something to be exploited,

7      but emptied himself,

taking the form of a slave,

being born in human likeness.

And being found in human form,

8      he humbled himself

and became obedient to the point of death—

even death on a cross.

9      Therefore God also highly exalted him

and gave him the name

that is above every name,

10     so that at the name of Jesus

every knee should bend,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11     and every tongue should confess

that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

Leader:   This is the Word of God, for the People of God

People:  Thanks be to God!

WORD AND RESPONSE

Time with Young Friends: “Jesus Loves Me”

Children’s Message: “Praise Parade”

Hymn: Hosanna, Loud Hosanna”

Hosanna, loud hosanna, the little children sang;

through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang.

To Jesus, who had blessed them close folded to his breast,

the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best.

From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd,

the victor palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud.

The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state,

nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait.

“Hosanna in the highest!" that ancient song we sing,

for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven our King.

O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice,

and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice!

Sermon: “The Lord Needs It” Luke 19:28-40

28 After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem.

29 When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ just say this, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ” 32 So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 They said, “The Lord needs it.” 35 Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, 38 saying,

“Blessed is the king

who comes in the name of the Lord!

Peace in heaven,

and glory in the highest heaven!”

39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out.”

RESPONSE TO THE WORD

Hymn: “He is Exalted”

He is exalted, the King is exalted on high;

I will praise him.

He is exalted, forever exalted

and I will praise his name!

He is the Lord, forever his truth shall reign;

heaven and earth rejoice in his holy name.

He is exalted, the King is exalted on high.

He is exalted, the King is exalted on high;

I will praise him.

He is exalted, forever exalted

and I will praise his name!

He is the Lord, forever his truth shall reign;

heaven and earth rejoice in his holy name.

He is exalted, the King is exalted on high.

Psalter: Psalm 31:9-16

9      Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;

my eye wastes away from grief,

my soul and body also.

10     For my life is spent with sorrow,

and my years with sighing;

my strength fails because of my misery,

and my bones waste away.

11     I am the scorn of all my adversaries,

a horror to my neighbors,

an object of dread to my acquaintances;

those who see me in the street flee from me.

12     I have passed out of mind like one who is dead;

I have become like a broken vessel.

13     For I hear the whispering of many—

terror all around!—

as they scheme together against me,

as they plot to take my life.

14     But I trust in you, O Lord;

I say, “You are my God.”

15     My times are in your hand;

deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.

16     Let your face shine upon your servant;

save me in your steadfast love.

Gloria Patri

Glory be to the Father and to the Son

And to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now

And ever shall be,

World without end. Amen. Amen

Prayers of the People: Joys and concerns

Silent Prayer, Pastoral Prayer

SENDING FORTH

Hymn: “Lamb of God”

Your only son, no sin to hide,

but you have sent him from your side,

to walk upon this guilty sod,

and to become the Lamb of God.

Your gift of love, they crucified,

they laughed and scored him as he died,

the humble king they named a fraud

and sacrificed the Lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in his precious blood

my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

I was so lost, I should have died,

but you have brought me to your side,

to be led by your staff and rod,

and to be called a lamb of God.

O Lamb of God, sweet Lamb of God,

I love the holy Lamb of God!

O wash me in his precious blood

my Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

Benediction
